of the Coxswain Grade 3 Course

As a Coxswain Grade 3 you can command and operate the engines of domestic commercial vessels under 12 metres, with limits depending on the type of operation. Note: The Coxswain Grade 3 has a 6 person carriage limit. Including crew and passengers.

Training Options with Us

1. Complete the IYT Small Powerboat & RIB Master Certificate of Competence course. This is a 3 day program with dates, pricing and online bookings available on our Superyacht Crew Academy site: Tender Driving - IYT RIB - Superyacht Crew Academy

2. If you hold a recreational boat licence, complete the practical on water tasks witnessed & signed off by an observer using the AMSA 1882 form. Plus, you must hold one day of qualifying sea service on a commercial vessel. The practical assessment can be arranged as a private course  with an available instructor. 

3. Provide First Aid (HLTAID011) training is available if required. 

Review AMSA's Coxswain Grade 3 webpage to check your eligibility. To qualify as a Coxswain Grade 3, you need:

• a signed certificate of medical fitness (AMSA form 1850)

• a current first aid certificate (HLTAID011 'Provide first aid' certificate, or equivalent)

• either:

  • evidence of completing the required training course, or

  • a recreational boat licence, a completed AMSA form 1882, and evidence of sea service

While you carry these documents, you can operate as a Coxswain Grade 3 without an AMSA-issued certificate. You must keep copies of these documents on board whenever you are operating & ensure they are still valid.
